As health professionals, psychologists use the discipline’s knowledge to help resolve people’s social and behavioural problems and enhance their welfare. As scientists, psychologists undertake research into aspects of human behaviour and mental processes. The Bachelor of Psychology is delivered by a cohort of industry leaders with valuable professional relationships and networks. While CSU’s four-year Bachelor of Psychology provides you with the minimum academic requirements to pursue a career as a psychologist, you will also be qualified to take up employment in one of the diverse fields in which psychological knowledge is highly valued. You will acquire knowledge across a range of key areas, including: cognition developmental and social psychology psychological testing biopsychology psychopathology personality learning theory research methodology. You will also study units in sociology and complete a minor study chosen from disciplines including: biology English history and politics human resource management Indigenous studies information technology justice studies management marketing mathematics and statistics philosophy social welfare sociology. A broad choice of electives is available, including units on substance abuse, stress and trauma, and the psychology of crime and the legal system. It is important that you choose minors and subjects in consultation with the Course Director to ensure course requirements are met. You may also have the opportunity to apply to complete a supervised experience at an international university. Meritorious students will be eligible to transfer to the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours), and all students must satisfy academic criteria by the end of third year (or equivalent) in order to progress into the fourth year (or equivalent) of this course. Students who do not satisfy the criteria for progression to fourth year will graduate with a three-year psychology degree, the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology). The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) may also be used as a pathway to the Bachelor of Psychology for students who do not meet the initial entry requirements, as the ATAR (or equivalent) for entry into the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) is lower. Career opportunities A psychology degree opens many doors. Completion of the course satisfies the minimum academic requirements for provisional registration as a psychologist. You could be a fully registered psychologist with a further two years of training and experience (see above). You could also explore related careers where psychological knowledge is highly prized, in areas such as: counselling social policy and research human resources market research social welfare health educational and correctional facilities. National statistics indicate earnings for psychologists are above average and employment opportunities for psychologists are expected to grow very strongly. Professional recognition The accrediting body for all psychology courses is the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). The peak professional body is the Australian Psychological Society (APS). The course is accredited with APAC as a four-year sequence of study. Successful completion of the course satisfies the minimum academic requirements for provisional registration as a psychologist. General registration requires a further two years of training and experience, comprising one of: two years of supervised work experience; completion of two years of study in an APAC-accredited postgraduate program; or one year of further university study, followed by one year of supervised work experience. Admission information Indicative ATAR 80.00 Applicants should note a high level of previous academic achievement is required for admission to this course. Applicants who are not basing their application for admission to this course on their ATAR (or equivalent), should note that a high level of previous academic achievement can be used as a basis for application (e.g., a GPA of 5.5 which is between Credit and Distinction grades across 8 university level subjects). Applicants who do not meet the entry requirement for the Bachelor of Psychology may be eligible for entry into CSU’s Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology). This is undertaken in two practicums in approved agencies. Every attempt is made to accommodate students in placements close to their place of residence and to tailor the practicum to suit the schedules of individual students, but such placements cannot be guaranteed. For those students entering from secondary school it is assumed that any one 2 unit subject in English has been successfully completed in the Higher School Certificate. Advanced/graduate entry Students must have a three-year Social Science related degree or its equivalent or have successfully completed two-thirds of a recognised Social Science related degree including the successful completion of at least one session length subject in each of the following areas: Developmental psychology (or equivalent) Sociology Australian Government and politics and/or welfare politics, social policy and social philosophy, or Australian economic and social history Research methods The successful completion of 12 other relevant session-length subjects. Subjects that are not satisfied in these prerequisites will need to be completed prior to entering the course. OR With approval of the Course Director, some subjects that are not satisfied in these prerequisites may be completed within the degree with a commensurate reduction of credit granted on entry. Integrated Students must be concurrently enrolled with an affiliated institution in a course that will lead to completion of a Diploma of Community Services.
